How Do You Find a Ring Size Without Asking?

The surprise is worth protecting, but not at the cost of a ring that cannot be fixed. Start with the safest method you can actually pull off, then choose a design that forgives a small miss.

You want the moment to be a surprise. You also want the ring to stay on the finger. Those two goals conflict for only one thing: the size. The good news is that a small miss is usually easy to fix, as long as you pick the right ring. A wrong guess on the wrong ring is the real problem.

Which quiet method should you try first?

Pick the most accurate method you can manage without raising suspicion. Retailers publish most of the advice on this topic, so treat their tips as practical suggestions, not research.

Borrow a ring from the right finger

Brilliant Earth suggests using a ring worn on the left ring finger, ideally one that is worn rarely so nobody misses it. A jeweler can measure it. Helzberg points out that a missing favorite can get noticed, so do not take the one they wear daily. Rings worn on other fingers give you a clue, but not an answer.

Trace it or press it

If the ring cannot leave the house, trace it on paper or press it into putty or soap to make an impression, then clean the ring carefully. Trace the inside edge. Do it twice and compare. Our ring size tool converts inside diameter to US size.

Ask one trusted person

A sibling or parent may already know. Brilliant Earth’s advice is to limit this to one or two people. Pick someone who can keep a secret, and tell them when you plan to propose, so they know how long they need to hold it.

Make the jeweler visit feel casual

Helzberg calls a professional fitting the only truly accurate option. If you have already talked about marriage, a casual stop while out shopping can work. They will probably guess. But they may not guess when, and you can wait a few weeks.

What if you still do not know?

Choose your error on purpose. Brilliant Earth’s guide says slightly too big beats slightly too small, because sizing beads or an adjuster band can hold a loose ring until it is resized. A ring that will not go over the knuckle spoils the moment.

For example, if your best guess falls between a 6 and a 7, buy the 7 in a design that can be resized, and keep the receipt handy. A loose ring should be worn with care until it is fixed. It can slip off when hands are cold or wet.

Fingers change. Heat, cold, and time of day can all make a difference, and a large knuckle can make a ring feel tighter going on than it sits once it is in place. This is why a final fitting after the proposal is a normal step, even with a measured size.

What do the sizes mean in millimeters?

US sizes are based on inside diameter. Each whole size differs by 0.032 inches, or about 0.81 mm, so the difference between sizes is small. Width matters too: a wide band can feel tighter than a narrow band of the same size, so tell the jeweler the width of any ring you measure.

US size Inside diameter
5 15.7 mm
6 16.5 mm
7 17.3 mm
8 18.1 mm
9 18.9 mm

For example, if a tracing shows an inside diameter near 17.3 mm, that points to about a US 7. If it falls near 16.9 mm, you are between a 6 and a 7, so lean toward the larger size if the design can be resized. Measure more than once, because a tenth of a millimeter here and there adds up.

Do not assume an average size. Your partner’s hand is the only one that counts. A ruler held against a ring is also a weak measure, because small errors can cross a whole size. Use a jeweler’s mandrel where you can.

What happens if the size is wrong?

Usually, a jeweler fixes it. One jeweler’s guide says most rings can move about one to two sizes without major issues, and warns that more than two sizes can weaken the structure, especially on delicate or vintage rings. That is a jeweler’s rule of thumb, so ask your jeweler to inspect your specific ring. Resizing can usually wait until after the proposal. The surprise is safe either way.

Some designs give you less room to adjust:

  • Full eternity bands. Stones run around the whole band. Brilliant Earth notes they may not be resizable, and Robinsons says the continuous stones present a challenge.
  • Tungsten and titanium. Robinsons says these hard metals often cannot be resized at all.
  • Tension settings and unusual mounts. Robinsons says they may need specialized work that can risk the stones.
  • Gold and platinum bands in simple designs. These are generally the easier case.

If you truly cannot get a size, a plain gold or platinum band is the most forgiving choice. Save the eternity band for later, or for the wedding band once you know the size for sure.

What should you confirm before you pay?

Ask these at the counter, and have the answers written down, as the FTC advises. They fit alongside our full list of questions for a jeweler.

  1. Can this exact ring be resized? By how much, up or down?
  2. Is the first resizing included? For how long?
  3. Does resizing affect my return window or warranty?
  4. Can I exchange the ring if it cannot be resized to fit?

Policies differ. Brilliant Earth, for example, says resizable designs can be resized within one year at no extra cost. Do not assume the same terms apply elsewhere.

Would a temporary setting be better?

Sometimes the kindest way around the size problem is to skip it. You can propose with a diamond in a temporary setting and choose the final ring together. You keep the surprise of the question and give up only the surprise of the design. If you are not confident about their taste either, this option solves both problems. Our carat size tool can help you plan the stone while you wait.

Questions readers ask

How can I find my girlfriend's ring size without her knowing?

The most reliable quiet method is to borrow a ring she wears on her left ring finger and have a jeweler measure it. If you cannot borrow one, trace it or press it into soft putty, or ask a trusted friend or relative.

Is it better to buy a ring too big or too small?

Slightly too big is usually safer. Brilliant Earth's guide says a loose ring can be held in place with sizing beads or an adjuster band until it is resized. Take care with a loose ring until then, because it can slip off.

How much can a ring be resized?

One jeweler's guide says most rings can move about one to two sizes without major issues, and warns against going further. The limit depends on the metal, the setting, and the design, so ask a jeweler to inspect the ring.

Which rings cannot be resized?

Full eternity bands may not be resizable, and tungsten or titanium often cannot be. Tension settings can need specialized work. Confirm with the seller before you buy any of them.

Can I measure a ring size with a ruler or string?

You can get a rough idea, but small errors can move you a full size, since whole US sizes differ by only about 0.81 mm. Treat it as a starting point and confirm with a jeweler when you can.

Does a wide band need a different size?

It can feel tighter than a narrow band of the same size. Tell the jeweler the width of any ring you measure and the width of the ring you plan to buy.

Does resizing hurt a diamond ring?

Normal resizing of a simple band is routine for a skilled jeweler. Risk grows with large size changes, delicate or vintage rings, and unusual settings. Ask who will do the work and what happens if something goes wrong.
